Silicon on insulator (SOI) technology refers to the use of a layered silicon–insulator–silicon substrate in place of conventional silicon substrates in semiconductor manufacturing, especially microelectronics, to reduce parasitic capacitance within the device, thereby improving performance. The insulating layer and topmost silicon layer also vary widely with application.
FD-SOI uses an ultra-thin layer of silicon over a buried oxide as a means to reduce leakage and variation in chips. FDSOI also boasts a back-bias feature.
